Herb gardens for beginners

Herb gardens for beginners

Another great P. Allen Smith garden vid.  This one is on growing herbs.

In this video, he’s giving some expert advice on growing herbs, such as

  • type of soil
  • how much sun
  • fertilizing
  • when to harvest

If you’re interested in planting your own herbs, watch this short but info-packed herb gardening vid.

Container garden video + plant gender

Container garden video + plant gender

I love watching P. Allen Smith and his garden activities.

In this video, he’s putting together a late summer container garden. I like this vid because he explains how to match colors, how to pick soil and container size, and how to arrange the plants.

I’m not planning on putting together this specific container garden, but I use these vids to learn from.

If you notice, you’ll hear Smith calls plants “her” or “him”. Yes, plants do have genders. I learned this when talking to a Mexican co-worker one time. Let’s call her Maria (cuz that’s her name).

Maria loved gardening. She was telling me about her tomato plants, and miniature fig and lemon trees. During the conversation Maria kept say “Oh, he is jus so cute . . . blah, blah, blah, . . . and she really liiiika de suun.” I was so confused. I thought she switched the convo to talking about other co-workers instead of plants.

Finally I just had to ask her: “Who are you talking about?”

Her reply: “Miy fiih trree ju silly girl!”

Me: “O”

Maria: Big burst of laughter.

Me: “O” smile. blink-blink.

Anyway, hope this gardening vid is helpful.

Kitchen Garden International: Best way to transplant veggie starts

Kitchen Garden International: Best way to transplant veggie starts

Here is a very detailed explanation on how to get those veggie starts outdoors in the wild where they should be.

  • expose it to the outside little by little over several days time
  • transplant on a cloudy day if possible
  • water it well on the day you plan to put it in the ground
  • dig holes a little bit larger than the size of the plant and all the dirt that comes with it
  • shore up the dirt around the plant
  • make a shallow indentation around the plant so water will pool there
  • water each plant after you put it in the ground

You will want to protect plants from too much sun until they adjust to it.
