I was feeling curious today. I went to dictionary.com (my favorite online dictionary) and looked up the word “coupon”.
I have heard the word pronounced two different ways and wanted to know what it was all about.
Here’s the spill:
The word “coupon” has French origins. It’s related to the words cope and coup and is pronounced as KOO-PON.
What about the other pronunciation?
Well, according to my little handy online dictionary, educated speakers pronounce it KYOO-PON. This pronunciation is accepted as legit. The y-sound is “unhistorical and not justified by the spelling.” It was added based on the pronunciation of similarly spelled words like curious, and cute. And get this, people are criticized for y-sound in coupon.
As for the word origins, coup means a highly successful unexpected act; a clever action. Cope means dealing with problems successfully or calmly. That certainly describes the grocery store game.
I’m sure this is more than you ever wanted to know about coupons.
How do you pronounce the word?
